Washington - The White House, caught by surprise with the announcement of an unprecedented oil and gas deal between Iran and the US Conoco company, said it was "not a helpful development".

The White House spokesman, Michael McCurry, acknowledged the deal did not appear to violate the law but said it undercut policy of pressing other countries to refrain from selling sensitive equipment to Iran. AFP
