Venezuelan senators yesterday voted unanimously to suspend President Carlos Andres Perez from his post and send him for trial on corruption charges. He was replaced as acting head of state by the president of Congress, Octavio Lepage, 69, Reuter reports from Caracas.
The senators ratified a ruling by the Supreme Court on Thursday that there was enough evidence to try Mr Perez and two former ministers on charges of embezzlement and misuse of funds.
If Mr Perez is found guilty, he will have to resign and Mr Lepage will rule until the end of the current mandate next February. If acquitted, he can resume office.
