Managua (AFP) - President Violeta Chamorro removed the Sandinista commander of Nicaragua's national police and 11 other senior officers. She replaced the chief with another Sandinista member.
The US froze dollars 116m ( pounds 59m) of aid, partly to press Mrs Chamorro to fire Sandinistas who retained senior military and police positions after their electoral defeat in 1989. Mrs Chamorro nominated a conservative businessman, Ronald Aviles, as deputy interior minister.
