The US Secret Service uses code names for presidents and their first families as well as other prominent political and cultural figures in a bid to communicate their security and safety when in transit.

Traditionally, the names are assigned by the White House Communications Agency - members of the first family will be given names with the same first letter.

The practice of code names is often used in popular culture when politicians are represented. In popular TV show The West Wing, President Jed Bartlet’s code name was ‘Eagle’.
