Quake hits southern Mexico

Mexico City - A strong earthquake struck southern Mexico early yesterday, injuring dozens of people and severely damaging hundreds of houses in at least two small towns, according to local officials and radio reports. The quake, centred in a rural area 190 miles south of Mexico City and 90 miles east of Acapulco, did not cause serious damage in the Mexican capital. Local officials said the tremor had hit much harder in San Luis Acatlan and Igualapa, more than 175 miles to the south-east of Mexico City. Further south in Oaxaca state, radio reports spoke of up to $8m (pounds 5.3m) in damage to buildings. The quake measured 7.3 on the open-ended Richter Scale. Agencies
