An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit New Zealand's North Island, causing landslides and damage to buildings, shortly after the country's south island was hit by a similar quake, Reuter reports from Wellington. The second quake smashed shop windows, toppled chimneys and opened cracks in bridges and roads.
