MORE than 3,000 armed police last night held the Kashmir state police chief, B S Bedi, and several other senior officials hostage inside their Srinagar headquarters. The police rebels, mainly Muslims, were confronted by a larger contingent of Indian paramilitary forces, who insist the police release their hostages and surrender.
The police are demanding the arrest of a top police official who allegedly allowed a Muslim constable to die in army custody.
