Russians and Chechens in gunbattle

Moscow - Russian troops fought a fierce gunbattle with Chechen rebels after being ambushed in a village in western Chechnya, according to Russia's top military commander in Chechnya. General Vyacheslav Tikhomirov said there were dead and wounded as a result of the fighting in Sernovodsk, about 45km (30 miles) west of Chechnya's capital, Grozny, but he gave no details of the casualties.
