The US Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, appointed a panel to examine State Department 'activities and conduct' during a period of atrocities committed by US-backed forces in El Salvador, AP reports from Washington.
The announcement came against a background of complaints from some Democrats that the Reagan administration concealed the severity of human-rights abuses in El Salvador during the early 1980s.
