The Saudi government cracked down yesterday on a newly formed human rights group, stripping its seven founding members of their jobs, according to state television, AFP reports from Riyadh. It dismissed four university professors and a civil servant and banned two lawyers from practising.
The formation of the group, the Committee for the Defence of Legitimate Rights, was announced last Friday. It was set up to fight 'oppression and injustice' in Saudi Arabia and secure the release of political prisoners.
