Serbian authorities yesterday shut Belgrade's only independent radio station amid a wave of street protests against President Slobodan Milosevic. Radio B-92's transmitter, which, unlike state broadcasters, gave wide coverage to the rallies, was switched off, the editor, Veran Matic, said. The crackdown came despite Western appeals to protect independent media.
