Singapore yesterday declared ineligible the only opposition figures who applied to run in next week's first direct election for president, Reuter reports from Singapore.
Once largely a figurehead, the presidency now has powers to veto cabinet decisions. The official Presidential Election Committee said it had rejected applications by a veteran opposition politician, Joshua Jeyaretnam, and a fellow Workers' Party member, Tan Soo Phuan.
