Singaporeans elected Ong Teng Cheong, the government's nominee and former deputy prime minister, as their first president, AFP reports from Singapore. Mr Ong took 58.7 per cent of the vote, but the former government chief accountant, Chua Kim Yeow, surprised observers with a showing of 41.3 per cent.
