A senior French Socialist, Henri Emmanuelli, resigned his parliamentary seat yesterday pending a trial over his role in a party financing scandal, Reuter reports from Paris.
Mr Emmanuelli, a former Socialist Party treasurer and parliamentary speaker, was earlier ordered to stand trial on corruption charges. He resigned to avoid the embarrassing procedure of having his parliamentary immunity lifted. If convicted, Mr Emmanuelli faces up to five years in prison.
