Split in Afghan ruling council

ISLAMABAD (Reuter) - The Hizbe Islami group suspended its membership of the ruling leadership council in Afghanistan yesterday, accusing President Burhanuddin Rabbani of flouting an agreement under which the mujahedin guerrillas took power.

On Saturday, Major-General Ghulam Rasul Parwani, described as the deputy head of the National Security Department, was killed by an explosion in his car in central Kabul and rockets hit the capital's airport, according to Kabul Radio
