Food shortages mean that at least 20 countries are threatened with starvation or widespread malnutrition next year, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, AFP reports from Washington.
The countries at worst risk are African nations where crops have failed because of civil war or other disruptions: Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea and the Sudan.
