Russian and US nuclear submarines collided in Arctic waters at the weekend but the crash, 170km (105 miles) off Russia's northern coast, caused little damage to either craft, officials said yesterday, Reuter reports from Moscow. Russian naval commanders accused the rival boat of carrying out dangerous manoeuvres. Defense Department officials in Washington said the US regretted the incident.

A spokesman said the Russian craft suffered minimal damage and there was no leak of radiation after the accident, which took place on Saturday. Russian officials did not name its vessel but the Pentagon said the US boat was the attack submarine Grayling. The US said an investigation was under way.
