Security forces arrested one of five men sought in connection with the killing of the former Algerian prime minister, Kasdi Merbah, in a highway ambush at the weekend that left four others dead, AFP reports from Algiers. Algeria's military-backed rulers blamed Islamic extremists for the killing and promised to combat 'terrorist barbarity that spares neither mother, son, brother nor neighbour'. Merbah, who sought dialogue with Islamic parties, was buried yesterday at the cemetery where the former ruler, Mohamed Boudiaf, assassinated in June 1992, is buried.
