Switzerland's biggest bank ruled out an out-of-court settlement of a $20bn (pounds 13bn) lawsuit filed in New York by a Holocaust survivor who says Swiss banks may be hiding her family's wealth.
The Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) vowed to fight the class-action suit, which claims Swiss banks withheld accounts from the heirs of Jews murdered in the Holocaust. The suit was filed last week in Brooklyn federal court by Gizella Weisshaus, 66, on behalf of all heirs of Holocaust victims who had deposited money and property in various Swiss banks for safe-keeping as Nazi terror spread over Europe.
