Carabinieri searching the home of a corruption suspect found a treasure trove of gold and jewels, Patricia Clough reports from Rome.
The riches of Duilio Poggiolini, a senior official in the Health Ministry, include 100 gold ingots, 6,000 golden guineas, 20 1.2-carat diamonds and 50 ancient Roman coins. The investigators valued the loot at more than 200bn lire ( pounds 83m). Dr Poggiolini says his riches were gifts or income from his off-duty activities as a pharmaceutical expert, and not - as magistrates think - bribes from firms for allowing rises in the prices of medicines.
