Troops leave
NICOSIA (Reuter) - Canada's withdrawal of its 575 UN troops from Cyprus will create a problem for peace-keeping in the divided Mediterranean island, Andreas Aloneftis, the Defence Minister, said yesterday. 'After Canada's withdrawal, I'm afraid Unficyp (the UN force in Cyprus) will be unable to do its job properly. It's as simple as that.'
He was responding to an announcement that Canada will withdraw its peacekeeping force from Cyprus after 28 years due to other commitments and the lack of progress in talks between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
