Britain will continue to protest to Germany over a meeting last week between the Iranian and German intelligence chiefs about increased co-operation between their two agencies, writes Annika Savill.

The British ambassador to Bonn, Nigel Broomfield, called on the German Foreign Ministry, Klaus Kinkel, on Wednesday while Douglas Hurd, the Foreign Secretary, raised the matter with the German ambassador to London. Mr Hurd is now expected to send a message of protest to his German counterpart, British diplomats said.

The Iranian intelligence minister, Ali Fallahiyan, visited Bonn just four days before the attempted murder of Salman Rushdie's Norwegian publisher on Monday. Mr Fallahiyan has revealed after the talks that German and Iranian intelligence had been co-operating for two years - raising the prospect that other intelligence could have reached Iran through Germany throughout that time.
