New York (Reuter) - Ismat Kittani, a US-educated Iraqi diplomat, was named as the new UN special envoy to Somalia.
He will succeed Mohamed Sahnoun, an Algerian, who resigned after being rebuked by the Secretary-General, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, for saying the UN had been too slow in reacting to the famine. Mr Boutros-Ghali announced his choice of Mr Kittani in a letter to the Security Council President, Jean-Bernard Merimee, which praised Mr Sahnoun and expressed regret at his departure.
