The United Nations called on the warring factions in Afghanistan to stop fighting and start negotiations.

The Taliban Islamic militia has been defeated by ethnic Uzbek forces in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif after two days of fighting. Uzbek troops are holding the Taliban Foreign Minister and the northern military commander. The Pakistan Foreign Ministry said the Taliban were holding talks with their opponents. Reuters - Islamabad
