A senior German counter-terrorism officer and his wife were murdered in Libya, Reuter reports from Bonn. A spokesman for German intelligence said Silvian Becker, section head in the international terrorism department of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), died in a Tripoli military hospital on 9 April, several days after his wife died.
Libya is off-limits for personnel from the agency, but the spokesman said there was no indication of a political motive for the killings. 'Becker had been a North Africa fanatic for many years. We are assuming he could not restrain his curiosity and underestimated the risks,' he said.
