WASHINGTON (Reuter) - The US Defense Secretary, William Perry, urged the Russian Defence Minister, Pavel Grachev, to press his government not to cancel US-Russian military manoeuvres planned for July.

Mr Perry telephoned Mr Grachev to discuss Bosnia, but brought up the peace- keeping exercise after President Boris Yeltsin, bowing to nationalist pressure, hinted he might call off the manoeuvres.

The exercise is scheduled for some time in July in the Volga district involving 250 troops each.
