Aformer vice-president and rival of President Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan went on trial yesterday, the latest of his political opponents to go before the courts, Reuter reports from Tashkent. Shukrullo Mirsaidov, removed after a brief spell in office in January 1992, faces a charge of 'abusing his position by misusing state resources,' said a Foreign Ministry spokesman.
