The Venezuelan Congress assembled last night to elect Ramon Velasquez, a 77-year-old independent senator, as interim president in place of Carlos Andres Perez, who has stepped down to face impeachment on corruption charges, writes Colin Harding. Mr Velasquez is expected to serve out the remainder of Mr Perez's term, which ends next February.
