Warren Christopher, the US Secretary of State, told his Vietnamese counterpart that progress on resolving the fate of US servicemen missing in action (MIAs) was a pre-condition to lifting the US trade embargo on Hanoi, AP reports from Singapore.

Nguyen Manh Cam told Mr Christopher he wanted to 'reaffirm on this occasion our consistent policy of co-operation on MIA issues'.
