The German Finance Minister, Theo Waigel, said he would remain in his job after failing to become state premier in Bavaria, Reuter reports from Munich.

Looking nervous and uncomfortable, Mr Waigel said the executive of his Christian Social Union had agreed that the Bavarian Interior Minister, Edmund Stoiber, would be the sole candidate for the premiership in a vote next week.
