Walesa opts for an election
WARSAW (AP) - President Lech Walesa dissolved Poland's first democratically elected parliament yesterday after it brought down the government in a no-confidence vote. He refused to accept the resignation of the Prime Minister, Hanna Suchocka.
Mr Walesa must call an election within three to four months, two years early. Ms Suchocka's government fell on Friday on a motion of the Solidarity trade union, which initially favoured the government's market reforms but now believes workers are suffering too much.
