The sound of heavy shelling thundered round the southern Yemeni stronghold of Aden, ending a brief lull in fighting between Yemen's warring armies ahead of the expected arrival of the UN peacemaker Lakhdar Brahimi, Reuter reports from Aden.

In Sanaa, the northern President, Ali Abdullah Saleh, told ambassadors from the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council that his latest attempt at a ceasefire in Yemen's north-south war had failed.
