Around 1,700 delegates began gathering in Basle, Switzerland to mark the 100th anniversary of a historic meeting that launched Zionists' modern drive to create a Jewish state. Hundreds of soldiers and police cordoned off the conference centre to deter any terrorist violence or anti-Semitic demonstrations by right-wing radicals.
