Cuttings: Bean feast

ON LIGHT soils the hardier varieties of broad beans can be sown now, if you missed doing so in November. If you prefer, start them in individual 3in pots in a cold greenhouse, but watch out for mice.

Thompson and Morgan is this year selling mixed packets of broad beans, so you can grow several varieties in succession without the usual shoeboxful of leftover seeds to go stale in the garage. It offers 10 seeds each of Express, Imperial Green, Longpod, Aquadulce Claudia and Statissa, separately packed and named, for pounds 1.49.
