MARSHALLS, the seed firm, is offering gardeners trial packets of seed of its new iceberg lettuce, 'Tiger'. It has deep-red outer leaves surrounding a pale-green, crunchy heart.
Sow seed thinly, outside, any time from the end of March onwards, and thin the seedlings to stand about 10in apart. Early in the season you can transplant lettuces, but if you do this in summer, they bolt.
For a trial packet (enough for 10 plants) send a 20p coin to cover postage in an envelope addressed to: Tiger Lettuce Offer, S E Marshall & Co Ltd, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire PE13 2RF. A full-sized packet costs pounds 1.49.
