EDWIN BUDDINGS is credited with the invention of the lawn mower in the 1830s, but Atco claims the honour of making the first petrol-engine cylinder mower in 1921.

The company is anxious to track down early mowers for a museum it is establishing at its headquarters in East Anglia. If you have a vintage specimen, get in touch with Stephen Roberts or Andy Bowden at Atco-Qualcast Ltd, Suffolk Works, Stowmarket, Suffolk IP14 1EY (0449 612183).
