SAFFRON, an exotic spice used in paella and other dishes, comes from the stigma of the autumn flowering crocus, Crocus sativus. Unwins of Histon, where saffron was grown commercially until the 18th century, is selling packs of six corns for pounds 1.45 at most good garden centres, ready for planting.
