Kennion House in Harrogate, North Yorkshire , is an impressive stone-built property converted from the former Royal Bath Hospital by Crosby Homes. The three-storey house was the original main building of the hospital and includes a 24ft drawing room with a mansard ceiling which was the former boardroom. It is one of three reception rooms, the others being a formal dining room and a large snug or playroom. Both drawing and dining rooms have French doors leading out on to a flag-stoned terrace. There are four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a dressing room, stone-walled gardens and two garages. It is for sale through Dacre, Son & Hartley 01423 877200, for £595,000.

But for exactly the same money you could buy ...

A six-bedroom colour-washed house, eight miles from Kingsbridge in Devon . Fairfield House comes with an indoor solar-heated swimming pool in a marble-panelled room, a snooker room and a library. Two of the bedrooms are in an annexe which also has a sitting room, kitchen and bathroom, which would suit guests or dependent relatives. Both the sitting and dining rooms are 29ft long, there's an enormous store room – useful for boating equipment, as Salcombe is just three miles away by boat – and a superb kitchen/breakfast room with a Britannia range cooker. It has almost two acres of gardens, including a paddock and a double garage. For sale through Marchand Petit 01548 857588.

Or ...

A converted barn near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Maltings Farm comprises traditional farm buildings arranged around a courtyard, and includes a 29ft detached office building with a vaulted games room. Brick, flint and weather boarded, it has a 24ft drawing room with a large brick fireplace and fitted wood burner, a garden room with an atrium and a second sitting room. There are two kitchens, therefore one section of the house could be converted into self-contained accommodation. The main kitchen has custom-built units and a four-oven Aga. There are five bedrooms and two bathrooms. It sits in more than an acre of grounds with fruit trees and a paddock. For sale through Jackson-Stops & Staff 01284 700535.

If that doesn't appeal there's ...

Woodbury House near the centre of Wells in Somerset. The cream-coloured period property still has the original wooden shutters inside the front windows, original cornices and picture rails. The drawing room has a stone fireplace, the adjoining dining room and second sitting room share a fireplace. There's a gas-fired Aga in the kitchen, breakfast room and conservatory. Bedrooms one and two are linked by a door and the agents suggest the second room would make a good en suite bathroom. Bedroom three opens into a snooker room with a full-size competition table (for sale separately) but more energetic buyers may prefer the fitness room. There are two attic rooms for the family planning to expand. For sale through Cluttons 01749 678012.

But in London, the same money will buy ...

A two-bedroom contemporary house in Purley Place, a new Croft Homes development off Upper Street in London, N1, also for sale at £595,000. The white painted angular house is part of a pair and comes with a fitted alarm and entry system. It has a first-floor open-plan kitchen and dining area with top-of-the-range name appliances. The bedrooms are on the ground floor, both with en suites and fitted wardrobes. The living room is on a galleried mezzanine level, with a glass balustrade, electrically operated windows and a solid walnut floor. For sale through Thomson Currie 020 7354 5224.
