The visitors to Aggborough took the spoils, however, with a 1-0 win over the champions, who have an early chance for revenge in the return fixture at Bromsgrove on Monday. Elsewhere in the GMVC, Kettering, Macclesfield and Woking all drew gates in excessof 2,000, but the day's second-largest non-League crowd came in the Beazer Homes League, where 3,018 watched the Gloucestershire derby between Gloucester City and Cheltenham.

Once again it was the visitors who prevailed, Cheltenham winning 2-1 to cut Hednesford Town's lead at the top of the Premier Division to eight points. The Pitmen, as the Staffordshire side are known, are having their best campaign since joining the League a decade ago, but on Boxing Day they fell victim to the league's most surprising result of the season. They lost 3-1 at Corby, giving the bottom club only their second win this term.

Hednesford have chances to make amends at Chelmsford tomorrow and at home to Worcester on Monday. Hayes, also eight points clear in the Diadora League, have just one fixture this weekend: at Sutton on Monday. Marine defend their 13-point lead in the Unibond League at home to Winsford tonight and at Horwich - where former player Brian Hart has taken over as manager - on Monday.
