THE Nike effect has been blamed for blighting the fortunes of Sergei Bubka, Michael Johnson and Ian Wright. Now a similar syndrome has surfaced in football: the Republic of Ireland, Standard Liege and Bayern Munich are all sponsored by the same German auto giant, and are blaming their recent reversals on the Opel effect.
