Anfield patriarch dies
Sir John Smith, the former chairman of Liverpool and the Sports Council, has died aged 74 after a battle against cancer. Sir John was in charge at Anfield for 17 years during which time the club won 22 major trophies: four European Cups, the Uefa Cup, 10 League titles, three FA Cups, and four League Cups.
His reign also embraced two of football's darkest days, the 1985 Heysel riot and the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy.
