Today: In 1991, Dejan Savicevic became the world's most expensive footballer, moving from Milan to Atletico Madrid for pounds 11.5m.

Tomorrow: The Spanish national football team needed to beat Malta by 11 goals in 1983 to qualify for the European Championship finals. They won 12-1. Funny, that.

Wednesday: The first modern-style speedway race took place in West Maitland, New South Wales, in 1923.

Saturday: The fastest sending-off in domestic football occurred during Wrexham v Hull City in 1936. Ambrose Brown was dismissed by referee Bert Mee after 20 seconds. What is believed to be the first game of ice hockey was played, in Kingston, Ontario in 1855.

Sunday: Lillian Board, the 1968 Olympic 400 metres silver medallist, died of cancer in 1970 aged 22. Barred from fightinog in his native US because of his colour, Jack Johnson travelled to Sydney, Australia to become the first black world heavyweight champion in 1908, beating Tommy Burns. In 1935, Tranmere beat Oldham 13-4 in the highest scoring game in Football League history.
