Arsenal dilemma over Wright

Arsenal's board face a dilemma when they discuss the future of striker Ian Wright, who has handed in a written transfer demand.

They will inevitably be tempted by the prospect of a pounds 3m fee, possibly from Chelsea, for a 32-year-old player, but granting the request of a crowd favourite would invite a backlash from furious Arsenal fans.

Wright said: "I'm not happy at Arsenal any more. Certain things have happened this season which have upset me. Bruce Rioch has his own ideas on how he wants to play the game. Unfortunately I don't think I fit into the system he wants to play."

David Dein, the club's vice-chairman, is believed to want Wright to stay at Highbury while the manager is ready to recommend his transfer, and the situation could prompt a power battle.
