Yvonne Murray could only finish fourth behind Ethiopia's former Olympic 10,000 metres champion Derartu Tulu in the BUPA Great South Run in Portsmouth yesterday.
Murray, who missed the Olympics in Atlanta through injury, was hoping to step up her conversion from track to marathon runner.
But the Scot was always trailing Tulu, who set a course record of 52 min 39 sec, with Murray a further 71 seconds adrift.
In the men's race, Gary Staines beat the Commonwealth 10,000m champion Lameck Aguta, of Kenya, to record his third victory in the event in 46min 57sec.
