Mexico yesterday pulled out of staging the 1997 World Championships in Mexico City because of the country's economic problems.

Kenya's former 10,000m world champion, Paul Kipkoech, has died in Nairobi. Kipkoech, 32, won the 10,000m title at the 1987 World Championships in Rome.
