Svetlana Masterkova, who set two world records after winning both the 800 and 1500 metre titles at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, had her mile mark formally ratified yesterday by the International Amateur Athletic Federation. The record of 4min 12.56sec was set at the Weltklasse meeting in Zurich on 14 August. Masterkova's other record, still to be ratified by the IAAF, is the 2:28.98 she ran for 1,000m at the Van Damme Memorial Meeting in Brussels nine days later.

Tanni Grey, the Paralympic gold medallist, has been chosen as the full- time project co-ordinator of the British Telecom Athletics programme. More than pounds 500,000 has been pledged through the scheme, which aims to provide much-needed sponsorship at all levels of disabled sport in Britain, and maintain the quality of the British team, which finished with 39 golds and 122 medals overall in Atlanta, for the Sydney Games.
