Sonia O'Sullivan, of Ireland, set the fastest time in the world this year when she won the 3,000 metres at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, on Sunday in a time of 8min 39.33sec.

Diane Modahl returned to the international circuit for her first major race since the 1994 European Championships but could only finish ninth over 800 metres at the Adriaan Paulen Memorial Meeting in Hengelo, the Netherlands.
