Athletics

The London-based Irishman John Downes won the Reebok inter-counties cross- country title at Luton yesterday. Downes, who is coached by the former world 10,000 metre record-holder David Bedford, pipped Dominic Bannister. Cheshire's Suzanne Rigg won the women's race. The men's team title went to North-East Counties, while Yorkshire won the women's event.
