Liz McColgan's comeback plans were put on hold yesterday when the Scot was forced to withdraw from the County Durham International Cross Country race on Saturday because of a throat infection.
McColgan's race against Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan and Catherina McKiernan, the European 3,000m and cross-country gold medallists respectively, was eagerly awaited in the fourth World Cross Country Challenge meeting of the winter.
The Durham event would have been McColgan's fourth and toughest race since returning to top-class action in October, after 18 months out.
The 30-year-old former world 10,000m champion will now rest for seven to 10 days before resuming her training programme. "I was apprehensive running against such a strong field but I was determined to go out and get stuck in," she said.
