Athletics: Kenyans to make run on world's best

THREE leading Kenyans are set to attack the world half- marathon best in tomorrow's BUPA Great North Run over a course from Newcastle to South Shields.

Benson Masya, Moses Tanui and Paul Tergat are all expected to challenge the present figure of 59min 47sec achieved by Tanui in Milan last year.

Masyais favourite to repeat his victories in 1991 and 1992, having arrived with eight victories behind him in races on the tough US circuit during the past few months.

Manuela Machedo, who was the winner of the European marathon gold medal in Helsinki, should emulate Rosa Mota, a fellow Portugese and the winner in 1985 and 1990, by taking the women's race.

British competitors are expected to struggle, with Paul Evans the best among the men. The women's challenge will be led by Andrea Wallace and Suzanne Rigg.
